Burwell’s ability to establish boundaries, allow Jake to succeed or fail as his addiction demanded and to love unconditionally is heartwarming. I found it interesting how hard this mother worked to become knowledgeable of addiction, codependency, depression, and all the emotions that those things entail. The author could have been writing our story! I can't say enough about how this book touched me AND my family. My sister bought a copy and my mom has one for herself, who is now passing it to her sister. Aside from the similarities in our stories, this book is so well written. There was no "fluff" to take space. Every page is relevant and spoke to me. There's a "sisterhood" of sorts between us moms of addicts. Just like a mother who has lost a child cannot be related to except by other mothers who have lost a child... Mother's of addicts are similar, except our children are "walking dead". It's devastating, but the hope is there and in my personal story, I am beginning to see the glimpses of light of day.
